Cleaning Area Rugs

Written by Karen Bates (last updated August 16, 2021)

Have you ever become bored with your home's interior, and wished that you could make a drastic change without completely remodeling or replacing things? Sometimes we get inspired to make some big changes around the house, but we just don't have the time or means to undertake a huge project.

There are easy ways to change the appearance of a room without taking on a big job. For instance, you could get new furniture, or maybe spruce the place up with a new color of paint or a new drape pattern. But the easiest change of all that you can make to transform a room is to add an area rug.

Area rugs come in many colors, sizes, and patterns, and can vary in cost from less than $100 to well over $1000. It all depends on your personal tastes and budget. But even though an area rug is a quick and easy way to change a room, that doesn't mean that you don't need to maintain these rugs properly. Especially if you invest a fairly large amount of money on buying a rug, you'll want to take good care of it.

In many ways, an area rug is a lot like regular carpet. You'll need to vacuum it often and clean up spills and spots to prevent stains. Also like carpet, your area rug will need to be cleaned every so often to keep it looking great. But the cleaning process for an area rug is not just like cleaning a carpet.

It can be a good idea to hire a professional to clean your area rug. This way, you will know that the rug will be properly cleaned and taken care of. You have the choice of having the rug taken away to be cleaned and returned, or having a technician clean the rug in your home. If you are already having carpets cleaned, this is a perfect time to have your rugs cleaned as well.

Generally, the cleaning process begins with an inspection of the rug. The technician will check for holes or damage, and this step can help prevent further damage to the carpet during cleaning. The rug may also be vacuumed to remove any surface dirt and other particles. Depending on the type of rug being cleaned, the technician will wash the rug accordingly, then rinse and dry the rug. After the process is complete, your area rug will look beautiful and like new.

Make sure to remember rug maintenance, and have your area rugs cleaned regularly.
